A solid training as a private pilot in a commercial flight school or club flight school is the entry into the world of aviation for most pilots. Find here basics for training that every aspiring pilot needs, learning materials, headsets, practical items and a few "nice to have" products.
Basics
Must have products for pilot training
A personal logbook for recording your own flights, a triangular protractor for taking courses from the chart and a ruler with a suitable scale for measuring distances are standard at almost all flight schools. The ICAO chart Germany is divided into eight different chart sheets. Choose the map or maps in the vicinity of your training airfield. A new edition of the ICAO Charts Germany is published every year in spring.
The start - The Restricted Radiotelephony Certificate
Many pilots start their ground school with radiotelephony training. Most pilots acquire the restricted radiotelephony certificate (BZF), optionally in English (BZF I) or German (BZF II). If you are sure that you would like to obtain an instrument rating later, you can also start with the general radiotelephony certificate (AZF).
During radiotelephony training, you already learn a lot about airspace and aeronautical procedures. Training materials are available in book form or digitally. In our Training & Literature section you will find many other products for radio training.
The products listed below are in German.
Learning materials and exam training
With the right learning material, digital or as a book, ground shool is fun. Find here a selection of the most popular learning materials for ground school. The German aviation authorities are using different questionnaires. It is best to ask your head of training before ordering which questionnaire is used by your local aviation authority.

For heading calculations in crosscountry training and navigation ground school you need a mechanical navigation computer. Find below a selection of common models used by many flight schools. High-quality models such as the IWA 11092 and the Aviat 617 are equipped with a fixed wind arm for heading calculation on the backside. With these computers there is no need to manually draw in the wind on the disc.
If in doubt, ask your flying school which computer will be used.
A personal headset is hygienic and is in between standard equipment for every pilot. Since the Corona pandemic, most flight schools no longer borrow headsets to student pilots.
Which headset is the best for me?
Almost all training aircraft are equipped with classic jacks for microphone and headphones. These jacks fit for headsets with standard PJ connectors. If in doubt, ask your flight school which connector system is used.
We offer on ear and over ear headsets. In most common single-engine piston aircraft a noise level is pertinent. Therefore we recommend over ear headsets. These offer a high passive noise attenuation by the capsule. We also carry headsets with additional active noise cancellation.
With these headsets, a counter signal is generated to the low-frequency noise that still penetrates the ear capsule. As a result, the noise level is significantly lower, radio and intercom are better readable.
Bluetooth connections are useful, for example, to receive warning signals from navigation and traffic apps on tablets.
Active or passive headset?
There are two strategies: Some of the student pilots start with an inexpensive passive headset. A growing number start of student pilot begin with a high-quality active headset in order to benefit from wearing comfort and high noise attenuation already during training. Most pilots end up with an active headset after a few years of experience at the latest. A passive headset purchased for entry-level use is then still suitable for passengers.
You will find many other headsets here in the shop under Pilots equipment in the Headsets section. Give us a call. We will be happy to advise you on your choice of headset.
